Current Treatment

An absorbent is applied. The absorbent is then collected and transported to an environmentally approved site and dumped.

Treatment of Spills on Water with ecoplus

ecoplus is organic and will not contaminate water. It is also oleophilic (attracts oil) and hydrophobic (repels water). Oil, being less dense than water, floats on the surface. Due to its properties, our product, when scattered on the surface of the water, will absorb only the oil and repel the water. The absorbed oil will then collect together. It then simply needs to be skimmed or siphoned off the surface of the water (it will not leach the oil), and then plowed into the earth (land farmed).

Advantages

Due to the fluffy structure of ecoplus and because of the manipulation of the raw material, the hydrophilic characteristics become oleophilic (oil loving). This means that ecoplus is insoluble in water. None of the product will settle to the bottom of the ocean, rivers or dams and it is easy to remove after it has absorbed the petrochemical compounds.

The nutrient content will enhance bacterial growth so that the product can be composted, land farmed, or disposed of at any landfill site without fear of harming the environment. It also contains a diverse population of bacteria which, in the presence of the micro and macro-nutrients, will immediately begin to break down the petrochemical compounds.

Directions for use

Simply spread the product on the polluted surface and you will see how oil or other petrochemicals will disappear from the water and be absorbed into the product. ecoplus will change colour from light brown to very dark brown if saturated with oil. If too little product is added, all product on the surface will be of a dark colour. An easy way of determining if enough product has been added is to simply keep on adding ecoplus until some light brown product is visible after 30 minutes.

Disposal

Please be advised that due to the large variety of pollutants (hydrocarbon, chemical, paints and other) that ecoplus can encapsulate, and the widely varying disposal regulations relating to each one, as well as differing geographic jurisdictions, we recommend that you dispose according to local regulations at the spill site and that you contact your local authorities for advice in this regard.

Used and saturated ecoplus can be disposed of as follows:

  • Plough the used ecoplus into the earth (land farmed)
  • Dump in an environmentally approved site
  • Incinerate
  • Containerize
Dosing Rate Table

The following table is a rough guideline of the dosing rate at which ecoplus needs to be applied. Dosing rates may vary depending on the nature and viscosity (thickness) of the pollutants.
